The current recommendations for breast cancer screening in women with average risk are a baseline mammogram between ages of 35 and 40 and annual mammograms beginning at age 40. For women whose mothers or sisters have had premenopausal breast cancer, special screening guidelines apply.

If you are visiting Kenosha Radiology Center for a mammogram, here's what you should know:

• All mammograms are performed by trained female mammographers
• Compression is necessary in order to obtain a clear picture of the breast. Some women may feel minor discomfort from compression; however, this only lasts a brief moment and is essential for detecting abnormalities.
• 3D tomosynthesis allows for better visualization inside the breast, particularly in dense breasts
• We provide most mammography patients with their results before they leave their appointment. If further evaluation is needed, such as special mammographic views or an ultrasound, we perform those on the same day whenever possible
• It is necessary to correlate mammography and breast ultrasound results with breast MRI. For optimal results, breast MRI should be performed on a 3T MRI. We do not perform breast MRI in an Open MRI for that reason. Having breast ultrasound or breast MRI done at a facility that does not offer mammography is not recommended.
• If a breast biopsy is warranted, an ultrasound-guided biopsy will be performed the same day
• Annual screening mammography does not require a doctors order
